
Food Scientist
PreGel AMERICA is seeking an individual to fill its FOOD SCIENTIST position. He/She will be responsible for using chemistry, microbiology, engineering and other sciences to study the principles underlying the processing and deterioration of foods. Other duties involve but are not limited to analyzing food content to determine levels of vitamins, fat, sugar, etc.; researching ways to make processed foods safe, palatable and healthy; and applying food science knowledge to determine best ways to process, package, preserve, store and distribute food.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
- Assist company in developing healthy, safe, palatable, and convenient food products
- Conduct standardized tests on food products in order to ensure compliance with standards and regulations regarding quality factors such as color, texture, stability; as well as microbiological and chemical profiles
- Examine biological and/or chemical samples in order to identify cell structures, and to locate bacteria, or extraneous material, using microscope
- Prepare slides and incubate slides with cell cultures, according to company procedures
- Assist in the preparation of samples for in-house as well as off-site sample testing
- Provide assistance in the areas of quality control, product examination and research and development with food ingredients
- Taste or smell foods or beverages in order to ensure that flavors meet specifications, or to select samples with specific characteristics
- Aid in product research with a particular focus on dry powder ingredients, including stabilizers, emulsifiers and food additives
- Focus on methods to improve quality of foods, such as flavor, color, texture, nutritional value, convenience, or physical, chemical, and microbiological composition of foods
- Record and compile test results, prepare graphs, charts, and reports as requested
- Clean and sterilize laboratory equipment, while generally responsible for maintaining a clean work space
- Assist in determining the best ways to process, package, preserve, store, and distribute food products
- Order supplies needed to maintain inventories in laboratories or in storage facilities of food processing areas
- Assist in sourcing raw food materials as needed, based on certain quality specifications
- Must be able to participate in team and departmental activities such as meetings, committees, administrative obligations, etc.
- Ability to create and use spreadsheets as well as draft reports
- Must be open to personal improvement opportunities, including culinary training
- Abide by all company-established food standards, safety and sanitary regulations
Education, Work Experience and other requirements: This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Food Science, ideally with 3-5 years experience in food product research & development and/or food microbiology, preferably in a food manufacturing environment. Job related experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job as outlined above will be considered. Strong computer skills are required, including familiarity with Microsoft office programs such as Outlook, Word and Excel. Attention to detail, accuracy and organizational skills are a must.
